Another Skyrim Patch Expected

Okay, so I'm a day or two late bringing you this newsflash, but Nick Breckon (Bethesda "Community Manager") has posted on the Official Bethesda Forum that we can expect a second update patch before the game is a month old. What this patch will revise and how long PC players will have to wait for their patch after the console patches are released were not specified. But at least they made that all-important 11-11-11 release date.

We now return you to your regularly-scheduled programming...

  1. So... a second patch that will break as much as it fixes; but still no CS.

Can't decide whether they're trying to screw the mod community, or just don't care anymore.

(Were it another company, I might grant that they were trying to not repeat the mistakes made and never fixed with the NVGECK; but this is Bethsoft we're talking about -- I'll be surprised if the CS doesn't end up as some form of pay-for DLC)

Expecting more of the same like New Vegas? I didn't get Oblivion or FO3 until after they were officially done patching them, so I don't know if NV was just following the trend. And if there is no Construction Kit/Set, that would sort of mess things up on the Nexus. They only make a site if there is a CS. So far, it is just hearsay. Official hearsay, but hearsay none the less.

  3. Whether or not they make us pay for it I can't speculate, but I'd be willing to wager that Bethesda isn't foolish enough to totally deny us a Skyrim editor. As many have pointed out, their success has been due largely to the modding community; I can't imagine them throwing that out the window now.

    Leopards don't change their spots.

We've been getting screwed on patches and construction sets since Oblivion (how many months was it after release before the TESIV CS was made available? And even after all these years, it still has a ton of bugs).

The odd man out as it were was FO3 -- the CS for it hit the same day the game went gold, and actually worked by and large. One out of three is not a reassuring track record to me.

  5. NV was Obsidian, was it not? IIRC, Obsidian was formed by Troika people who were also noted for buggy, unsupported releases.

Not that Bethesda is any better, all of the Elder Scrolls games have been buggy messes. BTW, wasn't the Morrowind CS supplied with the game?

  6. These days you almost can't buy Morrowind without the CS, but I'd imagine it wasn't released with the original game at first... at least not before Tribunal and Bloodmoon were released. I'm only guessing here though since my Morrowind GOTY came with the CS disc.

  7. I'm not sure who's made what, to be honest.

They claimed FNV was Obsidian; but it still had Bethesda Softworks logos plastered all over it. No semi-standalone developer group claimed FO3 or Oblivion as far as I've ever seen (no logos on the games other than Bethsoft).

What I can tell you is NV was even more half-assed than FO3 was; and that's saying something -- they both follow the TESIV model of: "screw up; screw up worse trying to fix it; deny there's any problem at all; quietly stop working on the game and leave it buggy as hell after the DLC cash cow is slaughtered".

NV appeared to have different (more talented, I'll grant) writers than FO3 and Oblivion did; but the technical personnel were the same lackluster quality.

I mean, it's been a year now; and they still haven't even been bothered to re-enable script error reporting in the NVGECK -- and never will, since as soon as the last DLC compatibility patch was released they proudly announced there would be no more.

Although if Obsidian is Troika reborn, that does explain the witty writing coupled with horrendous technical execution...

Either way, it still feels to me personally like they're out to bilk us for DLC; and once that's done we're on our own, and screw the modders and players regardless of what bugs allegedly still exist.

  8. @Nos: As I understand it, Bethesda has two parts;
Bethesda Softworks the publisher & Bethesda Game Studios the game devs.
So NV was developed by Obsidian, Skyrim was developed by Bethesda Game Studios and both were published by Bethesda Softworks.

Confusing, isn't it. Especially when people just say Bethesda.

@Herculine: I'm pretty sure the first version of the Morrowind CS didn't work with Bloodmoon. Don't quote me though :)

Gah, typing while sick is harder than I expected :P

  9. Some days I think that if I want to do any serious modding, I will have to learn how to program first >.< Not that that is a bad idea, mind you.
