The Newstuff Chronicles #392

Somebody with the alias of "udderdude" has published a review of my ZDoom randomizer and it has been included in the latest Newstuff Chronicles on the DoomWorld Forums.

I've included the above link simply for the sake of verification and for anyone who might want to post anything over there. You can also follow the procession of personal insults here on their forum thread. Here's exactly what was said in the review:

This is a mod for ZDoom/GZDoom. It's basically all of the crazy shit from Realm667 packed into one mod, that replaces the regular Doom 2 enemies/weapons with custom enemies/weapons. It also uses the monsters/weapons randomly. Since most custom monsters are significantly more powerful than their standard Doom counterparts, the difficulty in most maps will be substantially increased. Unfortunately, there is very little done to compensate for this. From what I've found, almost every map I've tried is unplayable using this mod.

The randomness factor really ruins things. There's absolutely no guarantee what it comes up with will actually be playable, or even completable without cheats. One game you may have a decent weapon and enemies that don't kill you in one shot, and then the next you have a crappy weapon and enemies that will destroy you with whatever lame, cheap-ass custom monster bullshit they're packing. Imps can be replaced with slightly more powerful imps, or some super god-mode imp that takes a zillion hits and shoots lazors out of it's eyes or some shit. Shotgunners can be replaced with railgunners. Demons can be replaced by demons that shoot projectiles. Yay.

If you want to play every map in Doom like it was suddenly infused with "ZDoom Syndrome Extreme Edition", this mod is for you. Everyone else will likely want to pass. It turns pretty much anything it touches into an unplayable mess.

  1. I had to edit out half of my review before I was allowed to post the fracking thing. I just hope I managed to still get in most of the selling points I wanted to.

  2. Thanks for the effort, but I'm sure it will get cancelled out by more comments like the two directly preceding yours.

  3. I try to help. It is the least I can do given what you've done for me :)

  4. Ye Gods.

I'm tellin' ya, there is something wrong with the DOOM community on a fundamental level. Even more so than the Nexii -- and coming from me that's saying something.

  5. Oddly enough, most of the comments that have been made without using some synonym for feces claim that what is wrong with the mod is that it uses unpredictable random spawns and makes the game more difficult.

HELLO? THAT'S WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO!

  6. A classic (and typical) case of can't RTFM! Kids these days...

  7. I could've sworn hard and unpredictable was sort of the design goal behind the mod to begin with.

  8. Exactly. If the only flaw they can find with it is that it does exactly what it's intended to do, then insulting me and calling it every form of crap in the book must be the result of some other illogical and undeserved bias they have against me.

  9. Oh yes, no one has anything else to do in their lives but make you-a total stranger, look bad.
First, I've been reading your blog for some time, and this whole persecution thing is really tired, and frankly kind of pathetic. What are you, 9 years old?
Besides what about the positive comments on your mod? Those are meaningless because some people don't look fondly on recycled Realm667 stuff everyone has already seen before? It's just a gimmick, something to play around with for 10 minutes then forget about. Doomworld for one appreciates creativity, originality and longevity. Your mod features none of these qualities for the most part. The very thing it is supposed to do (randomizer) is also the very thing that makes it UNFUN. It's cute that you have your little pack of yes-men here who cater to your every need, but there's nothing wrong with the Doom community. What is wrong is the idea that just because you 'created' something it suddenly has merit. Also, I have yet to see a single 'personal attack' made on you in the forums or on idgames. You're just making it personal. In fact a few people kind of enjoyed the mod on idgames. I suggest you get back into mapping. If you look a the big names on the forums, they're all mappers or artists or musicians or anyone that creates original, new unique works. A map that you create with your own hands will be far more appreciated than some schlock you downloaded from Realm667 and tossed into a wad. Try it.

  10. Thank you for your anonymous input. Perhaps next time you can have the balls to put your name on it. If you know anything at all about me or my alleged cohorts you'd know that each of us uses the same handle no matter where we go and aren't afraid to stand behind anything we say or do.

  11. Furthermore, how is it fun or challenging to play through the same old maps knowing exactly what to expect and that it will be exactly the same every time? That argument is so full of holes you'd think a Chaingunner had his way with it.

    Got something to say?

    Put your name behind it.
