I've mentioned here before about my favorite Doom soundtrack being the music by Aubrey Hodges for the PlayStation incarnation of Doom. But no matter how much I babble on about it, nothing I say can really compare to simply letting you hear it for yourselves:
HANGAR
PLANT
TOXIN REFINERY
COMMAND CONTROL
PHOBOS LAB
CENTRAL PROCESSING
COMPUTER STATION
PHOBOS ANOMALY
DEIMOS ANOMALY
CONTAINMENT AREA
REFINERY
DEIMOS LAB
COMMAND CENTER
HELL GATE
HELL KEEP
PANDEMONIUM
UNHOLY CATHEDRAL
MT. EREBUS
LIMBO
HELL BENEATH
ATTACK
VIRGIL
CANYON
COMBINE
CATWALK
FISTULA
GERYON
MINOS
NESSUS
PARADOX
But let's not forget that Mr. Hodges also created similar music for Doom64 for Nintendo. Many of these tracks have a more "techno" feel than their PSX counterparts in my opinion, but still do just as well to set the ambient mood for a sci-fi/horror shootout:
STAGING AREA
TERRAFORMER
MAIN PROCESSING
HOLDING AREA
TECH CENTER
ALPHA QUADRANT
RESEARCH LAB
FINAL OUTPOST
EVEN SIMPLER
THE BLEEDING
TERROR CORE
ALTAR OF PAIN
DARK CITADEL
EYE OF THE STORM
DARK ENTRIES
WATCH YOUR STEP
SPAWNED FEAR
THE SPIRAL
BREAKDOWN
PITFALLS
Now be honest: doesn't hearing these make you want to play Doom with them?
I think I installed Mr Hodges' music into my Doom games almost right after acquiring it. Which would have been right after following the link you had on the blog back in the summer. The game sound wrong to me now without it :)

ReplyDeleteTo me as well. Yet even one's favorite things can grow monotonous if experienced in excess, thus I occasionally experiment with alternate soundtracks if I'm going to be playing frequently (as is often the case). However, I try to evoke the same atmosphere with those alternates (which often isn't easy). I'm currently working on a WAD that will utilize some of the spookier tracks from the Metroid Prime games, but obviously I won't likely be able to share it here.
Yes, I remember the last bout of hypocrisy on a related matter. *shakes head*
ReplyDeleteNot from you, from other sources.
Hi! I really enjoyed your Doom Upgrade with PSX/N64 music. I was sceptical about the music at first, but then i was drawn totally into it. Thanks for putting the WADs together. Is there a way to put the music into Doom 2 as well? I usually play with metal remakes of the original music, but i'd like to experience the creepy atmosphere in Doom 2 too.
ReplyDeleteNever mind, just found out that it works in Doom 2 too. Nice work :)

ReplyDeleteCool! Thanks for the support!
can you upload the n64 wad again? Thank you for the psx one. Any other file Ive found is miniscule compared to this one. Must be full quality. I cant wait to get this working with the official pc episodes! xD
ReplyDeletesorry for double post. I played the original psx ultimate doom / doom 2 and final doom / master level mashup games back in the day. The psx music brought the game into a whole different dimension for me. While I loved some of the alice in chains and slayer remakes on the pc, alot of the other music (while well made) was just not fitting with dooms atmosphere.
DeleteDefinitely up there with Mark Morgans Fallout soundtracks!

ReplyDeleteIt might take a few days for me to get around to it (my bandwidth gets used for many things) but I promise that I will indeed make the music WADs available from other locations and update the links on my downloads pages. Check back in a day or so and I will hopefully have it done.
Thank you!! I played ultimate doom last night, with various old and new addons in doomsday. It really makes the game scarier. The quality is much better than any other psx rips I've heard. I added fog and turned down the lighting in the engine to to make it more like playstation doom :)
DeleteThere are new links to the music WADs on my Doom downloads page now. I've also noted that many of the other links there are dead now; I'll fix them as I have time. Enjoy!
DeleteCheers Herc, I managed to merge all the master levels into one file, so that it will play nice in doomsday. I'm hoping the music will work for it too. I've also rediscovered how easily you can modify everything with doomsday. Also made the monsters alot more difficult. I want to upload the files somewhere but they are tweaked versions of the JDoom Resource Pack and other doomsday files so dont know if I'll be allowed. I've pretty much tried to make my own version of brutal doom for doomsday without the execution animations.
