More Aubrey Hodges

As I mentioned in a previous post, Mr. Aubrey Hodges has at long last made some of his best game soundtracks available for public download. Though I'm still not in much of a blogging mood, this is something that I feel is definitely worth sharing in a follow-up post since more soundtracks are now available. Again, thank you Mr. Hodges!

Aubrey Hodges Delivers

I know I'm a bit late delivering this news (the DoomWorld News Post was about a week ago) but I wanted to share it here anyway as I feel it's a bit of a landmark.
For a long time now, the soundtrack(s) for the PlayStation version(s) of DOOM have only been available through controversial sources. Now, after some DoomWorld Forums participation by Aubrey Hodges himself, the soundtrack's composer has finally made the original soundtrack available to the public (for a small price). It has also been said that other soundtracks from the other DOOM and QUAKE games done by Aubrey Hodges will soon follow.

The first installment can be found here.

Thank you, Mr. Hodges.

Development and Testing

Until now I've kept revisions of my infamous Doom Upgrade mod to myself until I've felt they were worthy of an official release but today the fancy struck me to try something different this time. I'm still working on what tentatively will be called the second edition of the mod and, while I don't feel that I've accomplished everything that I want to do before calling it a final release, the current version is very much playable and I have already made enough changes to it that in many ways it is quite different from previous versions. Thus I'm going to post a link to the current version of the mod here and, if you few readers of the blog feel inclined to do so, you can download it, do some beta testing of your own and give me feedback here. This time instead of suddenly getting a new version thrown at you from out of the blue you can let me know what you think of the development thus far and even make suggestions as to what you'd like to see in the mod in the future. So, without any lengthy descriptions of what you'll be getting yourselves into, here's the link:

This is a direct link to my DropBox file, which gets updated whenever I feel I've done enough editing worthy of saving. It's a work in progress, but at this point I think the only new additions will be monsters, brightmaps and such so the file found here should always be totally playable. Enjoy (I hope)!

EDIT:

Oh, I forgot...

For any newcomers, this mod requires either ZDoom or (preferably) GZDoom and of course a licensed Doom IWAD. I also recommend a launcher and a custom music WAD.

PSXSM

No, that's neither a Roman numeral nor am I typing in cryptograms again; PSXSM is the acronym for PlayStation Style Music and is the title of my latest Doom mod. Though the mod hasn't been fully-integrated into the DoomWorld / id Games Archives yet (i.e. it does not appear in a search with the page where it can be voted upon), it has however been accepted and added to the gamers.org archives and thus I am able to provide the direct download link found there in the first sentence of this post. The DoomWorld and other various mirrors should catch up in a week or so, at which time players will then be able to vote on the mod and post their valued comments.

EDIT: Just minutes after I published this post, the mod became visible here in the Archives as well.

So now you're likely wondering what exactly PSXSM is and what I mean by "PlayStation Style Music". To put it succinctly, PSXSM is a 94.534MB Doom music replacer WAD containing tracks in .ogg format. While it actually contains no music from the PlayStation versions of the game this soundtrack in my opinion elicits the same atmospheric mood that Aubrey Hodges achieved with his legendary score that was more ambient sound than actual music, hence the title of the add-on.

Faithful readers of my little blog here may recognize most of the tracks included in this compilation; this is indeed a re-working of a previous arrangement I had done. I've given it a new title since most of the tracks have been rearranged and at least half a dozen new ones have been added. If you enjoyed the previous version of the mod, please discard it now and download this version.

There's really not much else that I can say about it, except that I hope at least a few of my Dooming readers will enjoy using this alternate music as I have.

Thanks. Game on...

MY DOOM LEGACY

Not to be confused with the classic Doom sourceport LEGACY, this is the page where I intend to leave an often-updated and thus ever-growing list of download links for my favorite Doom maps and map sets. Sooner or later too many cigarettes and Reese's Cups are going to do me in (or I'm going to get hit by a bus) and it just seems to me that it would be a shame for me to have put a lot of work into collecting quality maps and creating custom MAPINFO lumps and the like only to see them be lost forever and never be enjoyed by anyone else. Thus I will continue to post here links to all my uploaded projects for use with the ZDoom and GZDoom sourceports (and any others that support MAPINFO lumps). This is in no way any kind of attempt to take credit for the fine works listed here; I merely do this to share these works with other players who otherwise might have missed them. Like my page of general game-related downloads, a link to this page will always be present in the blog's sidebar.

Enjoy!

EDIT: 05/07/2012

Well, that's what I had intended to do, but unfortunately file servers can't be relied upon to keep my files around for very long. So, instead of sharing convenient map compilations as described above, I'll just have to be satisfied with sharing my favorite Doom content by providing download links to the individual files. Sorry, but that appears to be the best I can do for now. Don't worry, though; I'm still looking for great sets of maps and will add more to this list periodically.

Happy Doomyear!

I just discovered this in the DoomWorld Forums news section and thought that it's worthy of sharing here since some of you might not visit DoomWorld often. It's a clickable, sortable list of every file that was uploaded to the DoomWorld / id Games Archives from Dec. 10, 2010 to Dec. 10, 2011. Files can be sorted according to author, title, date, et cetera and clicking on an individual entry takes one directly to the page where the file can be downloaded.

I'm finding this extremely cool because lately I've been spending a bit of time in the Archives looking for megaWADs that I've yet to play. The Archives (at least when accessed from DoomWorld's web front-end) provides a search function, but sometimes it can be a bit counter-intuitive and net 0 results unless one has entered EXACTLY what one is searching for. This list is quite convenient and easy to use, and I especially like the fact that it can be sorted by a column indicating the number of maps in a submission since it's sets of maps that I'm looking for at the moment. MegaThanks to TimeOfDeath for this!

Now, if we just had something like this that covered the entire history of the Archives...

Aeons Of Death v6

Never let it be said that I'm afraid to let folks see my competition...

The classic Doom mega-randomizer Aeons of Death has recently been updated to version six. To describe it in a nutshell, it pretty much works the same way that my own Doom Upgrade works, but where I did my best to keep things in the original Doom flavour AEoD does its best to cram into the game every possible bit of content from every other game possible. I'm not saying that as negative criticism; I'm just saying that's what it does. But rather than attempt to describe it in text, I'll let you judge for yourself from a variety of videos and screenshots.

The mod can be downloaded from the following links (both files are required):

...and you can read more about it here...

Archive Updated

I'm not really sure why I bother to keep my works up-to-date in the DoomWorld / id Games Archives (the latest anonymously-posted "review" of my randomizer mod was simply the word "GACK"), but I suppose to someone it's worth mentioning that the FTP transfer was successful and the most recent version of my Doom Upgrade mod is now available for download there. Whether it be famous or infamous, it remains a part of Doom history...

DOWNLOADS

In an effort to keep the blog sidebar from becoming a virtual mile long, links to the download sources of game mods either created by me or simply recommended by me will be listed in this often updated post which will in turn have a single link always present in the sidebar. (I'll try to remember to specify in parentheses which game a mod is for and keep them grouped accordingly; in keeping with the new spirit of the blog, eventually all sorts of things will be listed here.)
